Lesson #1:
Don't ever grow out of your "honeymoon phase"
The honeymoon phase is a made up phrase for two people being happy in their marriage instead of being miserable.
- I always say that this phrase, It's a term made up to literally rain on your parade. -
It's crazy to me that no one ever uses this term in a positive way like: "Oh look how in love those people are, they're living in their honeymoon phase" its always more like: "enjoy the honeymoon phase while it lasts"
The reality of this phrase is whoever uses this term, most likely is not hoping for your marriage to last. I know it sounds kind of forward to say that, but hear me out: People who want to see you happy, who want your marriage to last, and who support your marriage, will not tell you that the love you feel for your partner will one day die. If they truly are rooting for you they will say things like "Marriage is going to be tough, but you guys will always get through it if you remember the love you feel for each other now, in every hard time" or something along those lines. They will give you advice, and encouragement. They will point you back towards each other and towards God, those people are the people in your corner, they are the ones rooting for your marriage to last.
The ones who tell you:
"it won't always be like this"
"you'll get tired of each other soon enough"
"Give it a few years, and you'll be out of your honeymoon phase"
Do not listen to them, They are not in your corner - I repeat, They are not in your life to cheer you on.
Just because someone else is not happy in the current state of their marriage, does not mean you will bear the same fate.
As Christians we are already held to a different standard in marriage than non believers.
One part of scripture that I would like to talk about is:
Ephesians 5:25-29
In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church
Even though scripture only talks about the husbands in that paragraph, wives he also speaks to you. Just as husbands love, care for and respect you, you are also called to love, care for, and respect your husband just the same.
I challenge you to always be in the "honeymoon phase" because it means to be truly happy with your spouse. So in 2 years, 10 years or 50 years I hope you still smile, laugh and look at each other with the adoring eye that you did in year 1.
